In The World is But a Broken Heart (Signature Editions $24.99), Victoria-based Michael Maitland weaves together eleven tales of the hapless Fitzpatrick family who are perpetually shadowed by misfortune. Brothers Dale, Kenny and Patrick navigate a turbulent household with bouts of antagonism and camaraderie. Amidst difficult parenting, despairing mothers and fathers numbed by their occupations, these stories explore life’s complexities—violent labour strikes, predatory insurance agents, student-teacher relationships and estranged siblings. In addition to writing fiction, Michael Maitland is also a screenwriter. Stories from this short story collection have been published in The Antigonish Review, The Fiddlehead and Islander Writer. Maitland is currently writing his first novel. 9781773241296
