Like my predecessors, I intend to continue the work of promoting literacy in British Columbia.
I love books. I love the smell of books, the feel of books, the colour and the shape of books. They are familiar friends that greet me when I enter my living room.
Many of my associates today do most of their reading on screens of one sort or another. For many this is a welcome revolution, especially for sight impaired or those that want to travel with a library at their disposal. Electronic gizmos don’t work for me.
I usually have about six books on the go at any time and want to pick one or another of them up as the mood or necessity may dictate. I like to flip pages back and forth, sometimes just to reread a particularly delightful combination of words, a phrase that is catchy or when pondering a certain revolutionary thought.

Books are friends. I love to survey them lined on a shelf, reminding me of the story we shared or new, perhaps even useful, information contained within. I never cease to smile when I spot Brian Brett’s Trauma Farm and to this day the dark red binding on my old Dr. Hudson’s Secret Journal, first read some 50 years ago, still reminds me of the benefits of philanthropy.
Books serve to bring back memories of beloved people and places. The well-worn row of leather bound classics always brings my mother and my childhood home to mind. Then there are all the Taylor Caldwell novels collected by my mother-in-law. Unfortunately the volumes do outgrow the space and shelves have had to be built in heated garages to accommodate my desire to keep all my old friends. But never mind, I am getting to the stage that I will soon be able to read them all again and they will seem brand new.
So thank you to all those that create these wonderful friends of mine and thank you to the Association of Book Publishers of British Columbia for the work you do to a keep a healthy industry flourishing in this province and in Canada.
