Eastside Inspiration

June 28th, 2016

Join Teresa Pocock for her art exhibit and book launch for Pretty Amazing: How I Found Myself in the Downtown Eastside.

This free event takes place Wednesday, June 29th from 5pm to 8pm at Gallery Gachet, 88 East Cordova St., Vancouver.

Take a look at what Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside through the unique viewpoint of artist Teresa Pocock, an artist who also happens to have Down syndrome.

Pretty Amazing: How I Found Myself in the Downtown Eastside reveals Pocock’s journey to find herself as a poet and artist, when she was previously ridiculed for it. Now, Pocock has found her voice and has, in her own words, been “reborn in Gastown.”

Teresa has broken free from a cocoon of impossibility that the Ontario health-care system had wrapped her in. After they had forced her into an end-of-life Ontario nursing home against her will in 2013, Teresa is now at home in Vancouver and has things to do, places to go, and people to meet.

Teresa won a DTES Small Arts grant to create and produce the book. The Vancouver Foundation created the Downtown Eastside Small Arts Grants Program, in partnership with the Carnegie Community Centre, to give DTES artists “the opportunity to advance their careers by supporting and showcasing their work”
